Hi Mark,

For the record:
- the end point last time was that Wellylug could move its mailing list
to somewhere else _at_any_time_, and _without_my_involvement_ (people
other than me are in charge of the DNS, and day-to-day running of the
mailing list, including what is needed to get the subscriber lists and
all messages posted to date from the archives)
- this is still the case; with coordination with a couple of people,
that anyone could easily establish who they are, and none of whom are
me, the list could be moved by tomorrow (DNS TTL is 1 day).
- various people on this list (WellyLUG organisation) decided last
time that they wanted to continue hosting the mailing list here, with
the conditions involved.
- the rule is "no advertising" because it is a clear rule, that involves
the minimum of discussion about what is and is not appropriate; as
soon as you get into "some advertising okay, some not" it gets more
complicated, and more people will think their advertising is "close
enough" to what is allowed. (This is the definition of a "slippery
slope".)
- Wellylug is still free to choose whatever policy it wants on advertising
and that should be discussed here (wlug_org)
- If the decided policy is incompatible with the policy of the hosting
("no advertising", because of the above "clear rule" reasoning) then
the list will need to be moved somewhere else
- if WellyLUG decides they want to move the list I'm happy to help
someone do so
- since the mailing list has its own domain (lists.wellylug.org.nz)
it's actually pretty easy to move somewhere else, given another
willing host
Ewen
