Use the command mii-tool to check the speed and duplex settings of your cards, use tcpdump or ethereal see the traffic on your interfaces, check the hub/switch/xover is working. Between these three you should be able to work out where the problem lies (assuming there isnt a firewall ruleset getting in the way somewhere and your network settings, mask, default gw etc are all ok and "cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward" returns 1 on the gw).
In my experience its most often a firewalling issue (duplex mismatches with switches are also common but dont kill the connection totally)
