Which is why it is a good choice for running on low end machines.

If it means desktops which are usable - i'd say they'd have to fork out 
a little money no matter which way they turn.

The problem with these distros is that they run appallingly on low end 
systems..  Mandrake hasn't even been compiled with i586 support 
(currently i686 if I recall).

I don't think the people recieving these machines will be the ones 
installing them anyway, so nice auto-detection and gui wizards aren't 
needed.
