Yep, whatever you do, can't avoid this

> * finish the procedure with installing lilo when requested

Ick. As root, run lilo (from the command line). Use lilo -v for more
fun, lilo -v -v for even more fun.

Yep.

Assuming, of course, that all the windos XP install did is wipe the MBR
(master boot record) from the first disk. Good chance of this being
true.
