Is everything mounted in the right place after booting from the floppy?
I think with Debian it isn't, but I don't know Mandrake.

If not, all sorts of things can go wrong - install from the wrong
lilo.conf, the lilo.conf points to the wrong bood device or the wrong
kernel.

If the installer has the option to do it for you, I would have thought
that's preferable - if it worked.

Otherwise, if you can boot from the (LILO) floppy and tell it at the
boot prompt to mount the normal root, you should get the normal system
back up (just possibly with a different kernel).

Just my thoughts, untested, it's been a while, etc.
