Did you try urpmi?  urpmi is very good.  If you were upgrading from
cooker, of course you would have to upgrade to other packages too. 
That's the way cooker works.

I'm worried that if Mandrake goes under, the full-time developers they
employ to work on KDE and other projects will suffer.

Plus I really don't mind if someone else does the compiling for me; the
time I would spend figuring out optimizations would in no way be made up
in the productivity gains from slightly faster programs....
