Yes, I tried urpmi. But I still couldn't upgrade PHP without upgrading a 
multiude of other installed packages - which ended up breaking the 
system :-(.  Probably just a bad unfortunate experience - but it put me off.

I'm sure Mandrake will not suffer from the smaller distro's stealing 
some of their users - I'd still recommend Mandrake for most people's 
needs - the ease of installation being it's primary feature, as well as 
a huge online document and user base.  It got me started on linux.  I'd 
just recommend Gentoo for those who have gone through the initial stage 
of linux and wanted something else - something you can really sink your 
teeth into one step at a time and really know how your OS is working.

You'd be suprised at the speed gained when everything has been compiled 
and optimised for your system (this only requires 3 lines to be 
un-hashed in your make.conf file before emerge'ing).  I've heard stories 
of users running Gentoo via vmware on their current distro and programs 
starting / running faster than the programs running locally..
