Hi Peter
I use a cable modem here at home, and setup was a breeze.
First of all you need all the details that were give to you.
(ie: your host name, DNS Servers, Gateway, your IP Address etc)
First of all you need to know that your network card is setup properly. Can
you ping yourself using the console: ping 127.0.0.1 (this is a small loop
back test).
Next, in your network card settings, input your IP address (this is give to
you from Paradise), input the DNS servers ( 203.96.152.4 and 203.96.152.12),
and also enter your gateway (This will be in the same subnet as your IP
address). It will generally be 203.79.x.1 (x = the subnet you are on. In
your case the gate will be 203.79.118.1. This is now the basic stuff done.
The next part is to enter the your host and domain names.
Host = paradise
Domain Name = paradise.net.nz
If you need a hand with any of this, give me a call on 027 407 6780.
Regards
Michael
PS: These instructions are for if you don't have a router between your
network and the cable modem like me.

Subject: [wellylug] Saturn Cable Modem Setup
I am having difficulty with setting up a Saturn cable modem under
Mandrake. This may have been discussed before, but old list
messages no longer seem to be available.
I can successfully connect using Windows on the same machine so
link, provider information and NIC are OK.
I have referred to the 'Cable Modem Providers HOWTO' but this
covers Debian only for Saturn. Incidentally there is an error under the
Saturn description - it says that Gateway is the allocated ISP number
but with 1 on the end. In my case ISP is 203.79.118.x , but the
gateway is 203.79.116.1 .
I have tried to set things up through the Mandrake Control Center
trying various options but without success. I suspect that it may be
necessary to tweak some /etc/ files.
Anyone had experience of this please?
Regards
Peter
