And how exactly does changing the entire set-up of the group to include a
membership fee etc. not affect everyone in the group?

The question is not the 'freedom of action', but rather allowing the LUG
to appeal to the greatest number of people.
There seem to be as many people against the formalisation as there is for
it (from posts to the list) and any action to not listen to those against
it is contrary to your own advice.

My advice to everyone still stands as 'make your opinions known' - the LUG
is _your_ group and its future is in everyones hands, not just those of a
vocal minority. (Minority taken as the 6 or so people who have commented
on the formalisation via. the mailing list which currently comprises of
150 people ie. only 4% of people have passed any comment.)
