Although I don't use Gnome, I can definitely recommend udev. I use a
'pure' udev under Gentoo with Linux 2.6, and it makes handling lots of
peripherals a breeze, esp. if you need to reference their /dev/... nodes
from scripts.

The gentoo.org forums have some good threads about udev.

(udev is a user-space replacement for devfs or static device nodes)
