This sounds very odd. Did you check the integrity of CD 1?
Also, if you run KDE, do read the release notes.
Another alternative is to upgrade from the command line by copying
across all the packages from the CDs and defining a hard drive source,
and use urpmi urpmi followed by urpmi --auto-select --auto.
