I don't think the kernel source includes the headers (or not always anyway)

I would advise ammending that to 'urpmi kernel-headers' - although I'm
just guessing because I don't use Mandrake.

It is significant, I installed these drivers on a Debian system over
the weekend. Installing the kernel-headers is all you need to do, it
will run perfectly after that, betcha.

He got this DSE modem on my advice, because his external (USB?) modem
wouldn't work.

Although getting these drivers to install is not always pain-free,
once you do get them installed the modem works extremely well with
both Linux and Windows (should the occasion ever arise).
