I don't know how this works on TFT's, but on a CRT your description 
would sound like your refresh rate is set too high.

Like Tony said, use Ctrl-Alt-F2 to get a console.  I think then it may 
be easier for you to use the Mandrake Control Centre.  Just type 'mcc' 
at the prompt and press enter.  Then you will have a nice 'text GUI' to 
work from.
