One thing you might want to try is forcing the machine to boot into
runlevel 3 and running xorgconfig or xf86config by hand.  These are
the CLI-based scripts that will help you configure X.  They're pretty
straight-forward.  If you've got GRUB installed, you can boot into
runlevel 3 by doing the following:

At the GRUB screen, select the line for Mandrake.
Hit "E" to edit that line
At the end of the kernel line, put a "3" then hit enter
Hit "B" to boot.

Unfortunately, it's been a while since I've used Lilo, so I can't help
you there, but I think you should be able to just type something like
"linux 3" and hit enter.  YMMV.
