[wellylug] More modems

While we are on the subject of modems, has anybody purchased the
USR5610B, also known as the US Robotics Performance Pro modem?
It's an internal PCI modem, but fully hardware, and works (apparently)
flawlessly under Linux with the standard serial driver (sees the modem
on ttyS5 or some such). It also supports V92 (there is at least one
ISP in NZ that has claimed to support V92 in the past -- WorldNet).
Very handy for picking up those incoming calls while on the web, and
faster uploads!
My problem is that nobody in NZ appears to sell it. Ascent said
Renaissance -- the NZ agent for US robotics -- had bought some in and
not had any luck selling them due to the high price. However,
Renaissance didn't confirm this (wouldn't return my call). I have
checked the Telepermit database to see if it appears, and I don't
think so, but it's so damn clunky to search that I could easily have
missed it.
Anyway, before I blow a fair amount of cash importing one, it would be
nice to know that they work in NZ conditions (and if they are
Telepermited, but no biggie there).
Yours in frustration at telcos, importers and those bastards who
thought winmodems were a good idea,
Tony
