As I understand it the wireless driver is binary only (or at least a
significant part of it), and possibly also the ethernet driver (both
Broadcom devices).

Yes, I considered doing that too.
Do you find that you need to set up the VLANs in the switch every
time you boot the router (eg, with admcfg) or can they be programmed
once and then retain their settings?
