[wellylug] Recording under Debian

Hi all!
I want to record from a microphone on my laptop running Debian Sarge.
I have found sox and it's wrapper rec, but am a little confused as to how to identify which device under /proc/asound/ is the real microphone on my laptop, and preferably also which is the Mic In socket on each of the laptop itself and the docking bar (which I think is a Line In rather than Mic In, but can't confirm right now as it is 35km away at home).
I'm not looking for huge fidelity, but rather for usable recording of talks at a conference, so mono @ 8 or 16kHz should be adequate. I'm figuring a PIII 700mHz should be able to cope with producing an ogg file on the fly. Getting quiet sound into the laptop isn't a problem with an external dynamic mic suitably wired and appropriately placed (bin there done that before).
Can anyone offer some pointers? (I recall some obliquely relevant comments a while back but can't locate it in the archives.)
	TIA Peter :-)
