Can you please supply the output from 4 commands, after having plugged
in the stick (you'll have to type them into a console):

uname -a
lsmod
mount
ls /dev/sda

You may need to specify the path to lsmod (e.g. /sbin/lsmod) or even
be root to run it.

These commands will hopefully reveal:
1) Your kernel version
2) Which usb modules you have loaded
3) Whether or not the device successfully mounted (suggested by your
dmesg output)
4) Whether or not you can read from the device without going through the GUI.
