Christchurch LUG, my old stamping ground, officially has no status. It
operates with what seems to be the same model as WellyLUG - an open
mailing list for meta-discussions about the events and venues. A few
members are interested in there being presentations, so they pounce on
people in the wider mailing list, and outside it.

There is also a "splinter" group - one set of people wanted a greater
emphasis on Free Software than just Linux, and we now have two monthly
meetings in different premesis :-)

Money is the only thing that seems to be necessary - both groups collect
gold coin donations during a meeting, in order to pay for room hire.
You don't seem to need this with the LAN Place's help.

I have no idea how DunLUG are incorporated/constituted, and I had to
miss LCA so I don't know how well they did there ... and I don't yet
know how WellyLUG manage meetings either.

What sort of events do you forsee that need someone to be "in charge"?
And how much charge do they need to be in? For example, if you wanted
WellyLUG to be able to undertake a contract with someone, it would have
to be a fully incorporated society, with all that entails (Articles of
Incorporation, annual meetings, membership fee$ and so on) - otherwise
it would just be a private individual making the contract, and taking
the risk.

Especially with the growing presence of the NZLUG mailing list, it seems
to me that regional LUGs should promote social interaction in the Real
World, as well as hold knowledge about local suppliers/conditions, and
provide whatever hands-on support to people that they can ...

And that probably doesn't require much formal organisation ...

Credentials - I host CLUGs websites/wiki - but not the 'core' of CLUG,
which is the 'linux-users at canterbury.ac.nz' mailing list.
