Agreed, a definition is important although this really isn't that hard.

Advertising is widely regarded to be a form of promotion for commercial 
gain. A hobbiest giving away some spare second hand stuff for free is 
neither.

If it is advertising, then offering the list a bunch of stamped Ubuntu 
CDs would also be prohibited, would it not? Where do you draw the line?

And if a definition is too inflexible - well, I can't speak for anyone 
else, but I feel I'm intelligent and courteous enough to know what would 
be appropriate and what would not be (well, I thought I was until this 
thread surfaced). But then you'll get people who inadvertently cross 
that grey line... oops huh? Then you'd better define it properly.
