I appear to have been misunderstood.

Please understand that I object to advertising as well, and that isn't
what I'm driving at.

What annoys me is people making a fuss and inventing cheesy rules to deal
with some poor sod accused of advertising when he quite clearly wasn't.
What is at fault is the DEFINITION of advertising.

If so-called "advertising" includes offering dibs on gear to your
mates, or flagging a Linux job you might know about in town, fine - just
define it somewhere. A simple "no advertising" is not clear and
concise enough, because until recently I took that to mean commercial
gain.
