Insightful post, Mark. One could also suggest that a *_policy or *_admin
list be created for several that I'm a member of. That way, list
subscribers wouldn't receive the high volume of policy discussion which
takes place following a perceived breach of the main list's rules.
Anyway, in the absence of a wellylug_admin list, I have a question related
to the advertising policy under discussion.
Let's say I am looking for Linux hosting in NZ, or am looking to co-locate
a server with a Linux-friendly host here in Wellington. This is an obvious
thing to ask on a Linux LUG list, as many of the members will be involved
in the industry, and are normally those who have purchased such services
themselves.
The response to this question is most likely going to be commercial in
nature, and may originate directly from a company selling such services.
So, should such questions be asked on the 'advertising' list, or should
they be posted requesting responses to be made off-list? The latter option
would mean that other list readers may not get the benefit of the
information.
