They're not being disturbed in any way.  The problem is that the
packages are being held back.  I had upgraded certain packages on the
machine using a 3rd party repository, and I think that's the problem.
It can't really do anything with those packages just yet.

I've never tried to really browse.  I don't actually use KDE, I used
Fluxbox.  I only use Konq when I want to browse my home directories
graphically.
