For me personally, I took the "get an entry level job and get the boss
to pay for your training" route.
Having help desk experience isn't a bad thing it sure gives you a taste
of customer service which helps you be more effective when you end up
working primarily with the servers. Having a little knowledge of windows
isn't bad either (as it gives you more market appeal).
I would try and get into one of the big guys like Genii, Datacom, IBM,
Fujitsu etc and say up front where you want to go. They have all sorts
of resources you can use to train yourself up and people you can pick
the brains of.
Not being biased in anyway ;-) I would of course recommend this ...
