[wellylug] USB cable design and GPS for linux

Hello All
I have here a GPSmart fortuna that does have a mini usb connector.
After battling to get my data out of it on my ubuntu laptop, I
eventually found that this particular GPS needs to have to wires
inverted in the USB cable.
I am tempted to cut open an USB cable and do it myself, though I am not
sure how to properly identify the wires ?
Is there any coding colours in them or any sort of indication or
standard?
