It probably did go to cups; your 'lpr' may be a compatibility wrapper.
See if the jobs show up in 'lpstat -t' after sending them. Also have a
poke around in /var/log/cups* to see if you can find the log. Chances
are there's a missing component. Also, try the admin interface
(http://localhost:631/) and take a look at 'completed jobs'.
