DNS!
I should have remembered. Presumably they are correct in the XP
machine. If you are using static settings the IPs of the suppliers DNS
servers will need to be set statically in the Ubuntu. Copy then across
from the XP, or get them from the internet site of your supplier.

Also, this doesn't seem to be a problem for you but you have to
restart your network after every change. I often forget when I am
getting frustrated enough.

Don't know why the network tools aren't working but you are making
contact so forget that for the present.
