Hi Glen,
me again. In the help files under sound and video of something similar
there is a series of pointers to commands to download codecs for
making your Ubuntu world compatible. (I think it is the answer to a
mock question why can't I hear my mp3player or something like that.)
Once you've found that help section you will find it has been done
very well and you just click on a series of pointers. There is a
section for running encoded dvds as well.

It's easier than doing things piecemeal and sort of the official way.
